china and the west: the role of the state in economic growth

summary:

since the last beijing conference in march 2018, china, the u.s., and the eu – have continued to go through major policy shifts. the aim of this conference is to examine the role of the state in china and the west to determine how the different growth strategies and national policies, including industrial policies, being pursued by these three major economic blocs are likely to evolve and develop on the world stage.

the conference is centered around the following thematic issues:

1. trade, foreign investment, and intellectual property

2. industrial policies, innovation, new technologies, and entrepreneurship

3. the future of global governance in light of the above themes

the discussions will include analysis of these issues, with the focus on proposed solutions to challenges in each of these areas. sessions i through iii are closed and under chatham house rule, session iv is open to the public.

panel discussion (open to the public): the future of global economic relations: lessons from china, the eu, the us and beyond

this session will bring together leading experts in chinese, american and european economic relations to discuss the impact of divergent approaches to the role of the state in economic developments. the speakers will further explore how new policies on trade, foreign investment, new technologies, and innovation will affect the global economy, against the backdrop of recent political developments.
