new structural economics and its applications in agricultural development
thirty years ago prof. justin yifu lin returned to mainland china to teach economics and conduct academic research on china’s rural reform and economic development after he finished his phd in economics at the university of chicago and completed his one-year post-docresearch at the yale university. to celebrate the 30th anniversary, the center for new structural economics (cnse) at peking university will organize an international conference to be held in beijing on oct 21-22, 2017. this event is co-organized with china agricultural economic review (caer), an academic journal published by emerald in association with china agricultural university. selected papers from this conference will be published in a special issue on caer.
china was a large agrarian economy. despite the rapid progress in industrialization and urbanization in the past thirty years, there are still a wide arrange of important and urgent issues and problems that must be addressed and solved in the agriculture sector and in the rural area. in fact, 85% of the world population lives in developing countries, where the agriculture sector remains to be large and agricultural development, food availability, industrialization and urbanization remain to be top challenges.
new structural economics (nse), which is proposed by professor justin yifu lin, adopts neoclassical economic approach to analyze the determinants, dynamics, and implications of economic structures in economic development. nse highlights not only structural differences for countries at different development stages, butalso structural changes within the same sector over time. moreover, nse advocates that both efficient markets and facilitating states are necessary for successful industrial upgrading and economic development.
how helpful is the approach of nse for the research on agricultural economics? how do researchersincorporate structural changes into their analyses of agricultural developmentin a more fruitful way? this conference hopes to facilitate academicdiscussions and collaborations on such research questions in the internationalacademic community. we invite experts in this area to submit research papers to this conference. economy-class airfare (or second-class train tickets for domestic participants) and local accommodation (up to three nights) will becovered by the organizers.
topics for this conference include, but are not restricted to the following:
-general theory on new structural economics
-agricultural development
-rural industrialization
-structural transformationfrom agriculture to manufacturing and service
-agricultural reforms
